The modern art movement lasted from the late nineteenth century to the late 1970s and with it, saw the creation of a powerful medium known as photography. Before the invention of the photograph, art was constrained to various mediums including painting. Painting often captured a moment in time and documented images that were not able to be done otherwise before photography. After its innovation, photography became incredibly popular and soon was taking over the purpose of paintings. This type of photography can be traced back to the late nineteenth century with few successful attempts but really became popularized in the twentieth century, namely with the work by Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams was a pioneer of fine art photography. Before Adams, many enjoyed photography for its realism and ability to capture a specific moment in time but he changed public perception to believe it as a true art form. His work began getting famous in the late 1930s as Adam produced a series of books on natural landscapes. Later, he began doing war photography during Word War II which helped him become more known. By the 1950s Ansel Adams’ photography of natural landscapes such as the Grand Canyon and Yosemite began to become highly sought after and critically acclaimed. All of his work was high-quality and black and white and most said it captured the true beauty of the landscape it portrayed.
